On this day Hitler launched operation Barbarossa, his plan to invade the USSR. This opened up the Eastern Front, a new theater of war which would be disastrous for Nazi Germany.

Many historians credit this move with the end of the Nazi regime as it meant the Germans had to fight on two front, spending more resources than they really had to keep the fight going against two enemies in two places at once.

If Hitler had died before this point, this operation may never had gone ahead. Hitler was known for his hate of communists and it was stated in Mein Kampf that he believes Germany should invade the USSR. This belief may have clouded his tactical judgement, and ultimately possibly lead to the downfall of his rule.
