On November 9th of 1989, a spokesman from the Communist Party of East Berlin announced that the East Berlin residents were allowed to cross the border at midnight. Germans from both sides rushed to the checkpoints and at midnight over 2 million Germans crossed the border. People soon began to show up with hammers and pickaxes and started to pick at the wall, while cranes and bulldozers tore down the wall as well. The unification of Berlin was not made official until a year after the fall of Berlin Wall, on October 3rd of 1990.
