Geoffrey Chaucer wrote “Canterbury Tales” in the early 1380s. He chose to write it in English.
Chaucer wrote using Old English vocabulary which reintroduced those words and displayed language flexibility that was not previously shown.

Around the same time other important works were written in English, these include William Langland’s “Piers Plowman” and the anonymous “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight”.
These works set English up for success by demonstrating the artistic legitimacy of Middle English, instead of French or Latin.
