11 dic 1997 año - Delgamuukw Case

Descripción:

In British Columbia, a series of trials concerning Gitxsan and Wet’suwet’en land titles, known as the Delgamuukw Case, began in 1987. For many years, all appeals had failed. On one occasion, the Supreme Court of British Columbia stated that any Indigenous titles to the land were revoked once British Columbia had joined confederation. However, following a two day trial on June 16 and 17, 1997, the case saw optimism. It was ruled on December 11th that the provincial government had no entitlement to remove Aboriginal rights to territory, as they were of immense cultural and historical value. This was an important recognition by the Canadian government which helped begin to mend Aboriginal relations.
