This was the term which became popular for penknives and pocket-knives in the latter half of the seventeenth century. In 1690 George Harrison of Sheffield had in his possession <i>6 olivante Spring knives 6 plain Springe knives … 3 dozen horn Spring knives </i>(IH). The inventory of Lewis Nawl of Sheffield Park (1697) shows that he made spring knives but neither he nor his contemporaries was called a ‘spring knife maker’ (IH).
