Descripción:

The Old French word mes derives from the Latin verb ‘manere’, that is to dwell or remain, and it means a dwelling place. The earliest recorded use is in 1321-2, in a Parliamentary roll, but in the 1400s the word was more generally employed as an alternative to messuage. In a deed of 1486 a property called Nethirholynhyrst was first referred to as ‘a messuage’ and then, in an attachment, as the same mease (YRS76/133). In some documents the emphasis seems to be on the site rather than on the building itself. There are references to a meese with a laith bigged [built] upon it in Nottinghamshire in 1490 (SS53/51) and to one mease in Wadesworthe wythe one house buylded upon yt in Yorkshire in 1557 (Crossley158). In 1590 a newly-built house in Dewsbury was referred to in the court rolls as a messuage called a meestead and here the suffix ‘stead’ clearly refers to the ‘site’ (YAJ21/454).
