Descripción:

The use of the word ‘barge’ indicates that there were barges on the inland waterways from the mid-fourteenth century at least, operated by ‘bargemen’: in fact in 1379 Richard Bargeman was taxed at Grimston just to the south-east of Tadcaster. He is likely to have been moving stone, for an important staithe at Kettleman Bridge in Tadcaster served to link Huddleston quarry to York: soluti custodi dominii de Grymeston juxta Tadcastre pro stallagio lapidum apud Ketilmyrebrygg (SS35/34). It was called Ketilbarnbrigg in 1432 (SS35/49).
