Descripción:

Goering and Hitler claimed that the fire was part of a larger communist conspiracy. 4000 communists were arrested and Hitler persuaded Hindenburg to declare a state of emergency, calling for an election in March.

Leading up to the election:
- Hitler passed a decree to give him powers to imprison political opponents and ban communist newspapers
- Hitler made the police turn a blind eye to the violent SA
- Hitler persuaded industrialists to fund the Nazi campaign
