Causes:
-Edwin was angry that William went back on his promise of marrying his daughter. His earldom had also been made smaller.
-Morcar's earldom had been reduced so he lost money and power.
-When Odo and FitzOsbern were regents, they sezied land off Anglo-Saxons illegally.
-Castles were resented as they were a symbol of Norman power and their construction meant many houses were destroyed.
-William's geld tax was hated.
Events:
-Edwin and Morcar fled north from William's court.
-They were joined by others, including Edgar, in rebellion against William at the injustice of his rule.
-Informed of the revolt, William marched his forces north, building castles as they went .
-Edwin and Morcar surrendered and sent hostages to William as a show of their obedience.
-Edgar fled to Scotland.

-Edwin and Morcar were pardoned but were kept at court.
-The escape of Edgar created a new base of resistance.
-William's show of force convinced many that revolt was pointless.
