Earlier in 1939, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union signed a non-aggression pact toward each other. They conspired to invade Poland, resulting in the declaration of war to begin WWII. Germany executed the lightning war and rapidly overtook Poland from the west while the Soviet army invaded Poland from the east.
