Causes:
-Gold was discovered on Cheyenne and Arapaho land.
-This caused many miners to trespass on Indian Territory.
-The Treaty of Fort Wise was signed stipulating that the Indians would move onto a reservation, but conflict remained.
Events:
-Chief Black Kettle attempted to reach an agreement with the government and temporarily set up camp at Sand Creek.
-The governor of the area sent a force of 1000 soldiers to kill and destroy the Indians. Over 150 were killed, including women and children, despite Black Kettle putting up white and American flags.
Consequences:
-The government promised the tribe a large reservation and compensation, which was never recieved.
