Wanting to reduce tension between them, the United States and Soviet Union started to negotiate in the Strategic Arms Limitations Talks (SALT). On May 27, 1972, the talks led to SALT I, which reduced the number of weapons each side could have. This caused more treaties to be passed over the remainder of the war.
