SNCC stands for Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. It formed in April of 1960 in Shaw University, Raleigh, NC. The first wave of students sit ins is part of how it formed. Ella Baker was an important figure for the SNCC. She set up a meeting which is where the group emerged from. She also encouraged the members to look at nonviolence as a political tactic and not a lifestyle.
