The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was an act signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson. The aim of the law was to overcome the discrimination faced by people of color when it came to voting rights. It was considered one of the most far reaching and significant piece of civil rights legislation. The act banned things like literary tests that kept african americans from voting because most of them did not have access to education therefore they commonly would fail the test.
