Delivered series of “give ‘em hell” speeches where he accused radicals in Congress of planning antiblack riots and murder in S; As he spoke, hecklers insulted him → reverted to stump-speaking like he did back in Tennessee; Dignity of Johnson sunk to new low, started being drunk again; Johnson helped opposition get more votes bcuz he was so bad at speeches;
