The Truman Doctrine, proposed by Harry S. Truman, stated that the US would provide money and help to countries on the brink of communism in order to protect them from becoming a communist nation (practicing the idea of containment). In particular, aid was sent to Greece and Turkey, and the two countries joined NATO when it was formed.
