The HUAC stands for House of Un-American Activities Committee. It's purpose was to investigate communist activity during the Cold War. During this time, America was extremely suspicious of anything to do with communism. The HUAC had an intimidating presence and added to the fear circulating through the country. In particular, the Hollywood industry was targeted for investigations.
