NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It's starting members were Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States. NATO is a military alliance that promotes democratic values. This led to the US feeling very confident in their actions, thus leading to the Bay of Pigs invasion because they thought they could easily defeat the Soviets.
