In 1957, the launch of Sputnik was the beginning of the Space Race between the Soviet Union and the United States. During this Space Race, Americans were shocked at being beaten and poured money into the creation of NASA. The first American attempt into space was a failure, however they later successfully launched their 1st satellite.
