President Harry Truman ordered the dropping of an atomic bomb, a weapon never before dropped during warfare, on the Japanese city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. This was an attempt to end the fight in the Pacific Theater. Japan did not surrender, therefore, three days later on August 9th the U.S. dropped another bomb on Japan, this time in the city of Nagasaki. Japan finally surrendered, thus ending WWII.
