Lumumba is killed by the Katangan forces after being given support and permission from the United States. This shattered the hearts of many Congolese. After his death, they saw their freedom as a forgotten dream. "Adah says President Eisenhower has sent orders to kill Lumumba" (Kingsolver 308). Ruth May died after being bitten by a snake that was planted in their house by the witch doctor in order to get back at the Price family for being in the Congo, and trying to change their way of life. "The sounds of our voices rose up through the tree branches into the sky, but Ruth May did not." Ruth May " My sleep is visited by Ruth May and other children who are buried near her. They cry out, "Mother may I?" and the mothers crawl forward on their hands and knees, trying to eat dirt from their babies' fresh graves" (Kingsolver 413).
