18 sept 1889 año - Hull House opens
Descripción:
In 1889, Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr opened Hull House, a settlement house in Chicago, Illinois. It was originally created to aid European immigrants that were arriving in the city and needed help integrating in America. By 1920, there were nearly 500 settlement houses in America. Settlement houses represented the movement for women's rights, as they were usually led by women. Their ultimate goal was to assist the community around them by offering classes, concerts, clubs, and lectures to the public neighborhoods that surrounded them. Hull House ultimately improved the lifestyle of those living in the poor, immigrant sections of Chicago, and inspired the founding of many more settlement houses in the United States. Hull House closed in 2012.
