On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. This marked the fourth presidential assassination in American history, the last one having been 62 years prior with President William McKinley. With such a long time since the last assassination of a president, the nation was taken by surprise. Kennedy, his wife Jackie, and Texas governor John Connally were sitting in an open convertible during a motorcade in Dallas, Texas.The spirit was cheerful and bright until the tragic moment. Witnesses say three shots rang out. The first shot missed the president entirely. The second went through Kennedy's neck and then through Connally's back. The last shot hit Kennedy directly in the head, shattering his skull. In the footage of the event known as the Zapruder Film, his wife can be seen climbing onto the back of the car to get a piece of her husband's skull. To make matters even worse, the whole thing was broadcast on live television for everybody to see.
It is said that Kennedy was killed by a man named Lee Harvey Oswald, however Oswald himself was assassinated by Jack Ruby before he could attend his trial. Due to Oswald's untimely death, we may never know the specifics of the assassination such as his motive or who he worked for. To this day many things remain unknown about President Kennedy's assassination, and Americans still continue to debate exactly what happened. But despite this, we may never know everything about what happened on this tragic day in American history.
