As Union activity spread, they formed an alliance known as Solidarity. This was banned, but later as the economy of Poland was in ruins, the communist leaders agreed with Solidarity and together allowed free elections. Poland's anti-communist reform party (Solidarity) came to power in Poland. Lech Walesa was voted to become the leader in 1990.
