The electric wheelchair was a revolutionary mobility device created in 1952 by Canadian George J. Klein. Paraplegics are people who are paralyzed from the waist down. They cannot use their legs. However, these people may use their arms, and so the can wheel themselves around in a standard wheelchair. Quadriplegics, on the other hand, are people who have also lost some function in their upper body, so how did these people move around? Before the creation of the electric wheelchair, they would be completely reliant on others to move around. With the invention of the electric wheelchair, the quadriplegics who still poses minimal motor function could use that function to control the wheelchair. This invention was a worldwide success allowing quadriplegics from around the world to blend back into society.
