25 jun 1950 año - Korean War starts

Descripción:

The Korean War demonstrates the willingness of the Truman administration to stand behind their containment policy and the Truman doctrine. Korea had been divided North and South by Soviet and U.S. troop presence after Japanese departure from the peninsula in 1945. Korea became two separate countries with separate governments due to Soviet and U.S. influences. In June of 1950, after U.S. troops had left South Korea, North Korean troops smashed across the border (38th parallel) attempting to re-unite the country under Communist North Korean rule. NSC-68 or National Security Council Memorandum #68, was a pre-Korean War memo recommending that the U.S. quadruple its defense spending in light of the developing Cold War with the Soviet Union. The memo was disregarded at the time but resurfaced after North Korea's attack as a justification for increased defense spending, the second time it was heeded.
