18 agos 1968 año - "Back in the USSR" - The Beatles (Nicole Fernando)

Descripción:

This song very directly relates to the Cold War, which was occurring at this time between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. According to History.com, a multitude of conflicts contributed to hostile feelings towards the Russians by the Americans. The U.S. did not like how late the Soviet Union joined the allies to fight in World War II, nor did they agree with the communist approach practiced by the Soviet Union. Also, Americans feared plans to take over the world with a large expansion by the Soviet Union into Eastern Europe. This made the song very controversial at the time because it glamorizes the Soviet Union and shines a positive light on it. In other words, this song supports America’s enemy of the time. In the song, the Beatles sing the following:
"You don't know how lucky you are, boys, Back in the USSR
Well the Ukraine girls really knock me out,
They leave the west behind."
These lyrics speak positively about the women in the USSR and even boast about them. They even go as far as to say that they are better than the west, meaning the U.S. This could be viewed as appalling to some.
The Beatles incorporate the sound of an airplane taking off, one of their many experiments with new technology. The airplane sound introduces the song and occurs throughout the song every so often, eventually ending the song. This sound emits a feeling of war. Despite it being about a serious topic, it is a rather upbeat song with many different instruments being played, such as the piano, 12-string guitar, and the drums. The Beatles incorporate a background sound similar to that of the Beach Boys. As one artist is singing, the other guys are making that “Woohoo” noise the Beach Boys usually make in the background. This creates a thick texture with the vocals of the lead singer, the background noises, and all the instruments playing. The form of the song is contrasting verse chorus. The chorus and verse have different lengths and different chords. The dynamics of this song is mostly loud for a majority of the song. The instruments as well as the vocals coincide with each other, both loud and upbeat sounding.
