Mao had never trusted Stalin, but respected him as a Communist. He was shocked in 1956, when Khruschev criticised Stalin and his cult of personality, which carried with it criticism of Mao's regime. Marks the point of Sino-Soviet decline. Mao came to believe that Khruschev was a revisionist and China was the only true communist superpower.
