Introduced by John F. Kennedy and signed into law by Lyndon B. Johnson, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ended segregation in public areas and banned employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin. It is considered to be one of the most significant legislative achievements during the civil rights movement. The following year, Congress expanded the act and passed some additional legislation, such as the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
