As the Allies closed in on Germany they refused to negotiate with anyone who wasn't the representative of the people. The Kaisers ministers deserted had already deserted him, and the Kaiser was forced to abdicate from the rule of Germany and the next day fled from Holland.

Germany's biggest political party - the Social Democrat Party (SPD) - and one of the SPD leaders, Friedrich Ebert, became the Chancellor.
