1 sept 1939 año - Anderson Shelter Erected
Descripción:
An Anderson Shelter was built in their garden. It was sunk three feet into the ground - the rest being above soil level.
It was made of thick concrete with an arched corrugated metal and thick concrete roof.
The house end had a door and three steps to climb down into it.
There was an escape hatch at the back of the shelter filled with concrete blocks which rescuers could remove. Two bunk beds were built at either side of the shelter. Soil was piled up the sloping walls outside - some people made a garden feature of these and grew trailing plants.
Kids found a much better use for them - they became dens, prisons, camps etc. My Grandma remembered clearly trying to cook chips over a candle in one.
