The Cairo Fire was a day of riots and looting in the Egyptian capital. The violence was triggered after the Battle of Ismail (1952) where rising anger among many Egyptian nationalists and other residents took place due to the British army killing Egyptian officers and having control after the Suez Canal Zone. In Cairo, mobs set fire to cinemas, hotels, shops and British-owned businesses. Over 700 buildings were destroyed, and many people were killed. The fire exposed deep political unrest in Egypt and set the stage for the Egyptian Revolution later that year.
