("The most difficult aspect of the construction was the pedestal. Although the statue was intended to be a gift, the U.S. ambassador urged us to follow President Grant's requests. People wonder why the pedestal is so much taller than the lady, and all I tell them is, 'Ask the Americans.'")

Archaic spellings and other minor deviations in the French transcription can be attributed to these publicists. The deviations have been preserved to maintain the transcription's historical integrity."
