On the 28th of June, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne was assassinated in Sarajevo, Bosnia, by Gavrilo Princip, a young Bosnian-Serb. Nationalists. The killings sparked a chain of events that led to the outbreak of World War I by early August. He was assassinated primarily because Bosnian nationalists, primarily the Black Hand, believed he represented a threat to the independence of Serbia and other South Slavic nations within the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
