Yuri Andropov suffers kidney failure, and is forced to step down from his role as leader of the USSR. He is replaced by his protégé, Anatoly Krylenko. Andropov will be dead by Feb of 1984.

Krylenko introduces the concept of Perestroika to the leadership of the USSR, insisting that the only way to continue is to modernize.
