On 5th May 1860, Garibaldi and 1,200 volunteers set sail from Genoa for Sicily. they aimed to support the local revolt, taking them only 1,000 outdated rifles and no ammunition. their transport, two old steamships were technically stolen but likely secretly provided by the shipping company’s owner
