1 ene 1521 año - Francisco de Chicora
Descripción:
Francisco de Chicora was a Native American captured in 1521 during a Spanish slaving expedition led by Lucas Vázquez de Ayllón (pictured) in the region now known as South Carolina. Taken to Spain along with others, he was baptized, learned Spanish, and served as an informant about the Americas. His vivid accounts, recorded and expanded by chroniclers like Peter Martyr, painted the New World as rich, exotic, and ripe for colonization, helping fuel European imperial ambitions. Francisco's story reflects the early phase of the transatlantic slave trade, which initially targeted indigenous peoples before shifting to Africans. Notably, he was used both as a slave and as a tool of propaganda. According to some accounts, when Ayllón later returned to the Americas with a colonizing expedition, Francisco escaped and returned to his people. His story highlights violent exploitation at the heart of colonial expansion.
