Styled as an American counterpart to hereditary European orders, adopted Native titles for its officers. Early fraternal orders (civic, not based on religious or political creed) sought to bring the American populous (of White men) together. Appropriated Indigenous iconography, based on the notion that spirit of inclusion/tolerance was a distinctly Indigenous characteristic.
