27 ene 2011 año - Yemeni revolution begins

Descripción:

With almost half of its population living below the poverty line and one-third suffering from chronic hunger, corruption in Yemen's government leads to mass protest. Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh (pictured) has maintained office for the past 30 years and seemingly groomed his son to eventually replace him. Saleh seeks to amend the constitution to allow for his holding of office for life.

Protests calling for Saleh's removal from office (supported by Houthi forces) result in much of the country operating outside of the government's control, and he is forced to resign. Saleh's vice president, Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi (pictured), wins the following election as the sole candidate, solidifying the transition of power. Houthi forces and much of the public remain unhappy with the outcome.
