2. Significance:
a) Established to train the British civil servants of the East India Company in Indian languages, laws, and culture. Played a major role in the growth of Oriental studies and the development of Indian languages.
b) Many notable scholars, including Henry Thomas Colebrooke and William Carey, were associated with it.
c) Contributed to the translation of several classical Indian texts into English.
