The Missouri Compromise was a federal law that responded to growing tensions about equal representation for both slave states and free states in the US Senate. It stated that the newly ratified state of Missouri would become a slave state, and the new state of Maine would become a free state. Furthermore, it also prohibits all states above 36'30* (Missouri's southern border) to become a slave state. The Missouri Compromise contributed to the Civil War by creating tensions surrounding slavery with the new 36’30* division. Future representation of both slave states and free states was at jeopardy with the creation of the Missouri Compromise.
