Mujahideen veteran, Mullah Umar, founds the Taliban, or "students," made up primarily of students and professors. This was a political and military movement intending to address the issues of extortion and other criminal activities brought on by the various militant groups and warlords in Afghanistan. They wanted to push Afghanistan toward a regime more reflective of what they considered to be traditional Islamic values.
