Chiang Kai-Shek's determination to destroy the CCP - After the end of the First United Front, Chiang believed the communists were a greater threat than the warlords to GMD unity. Even a small force at Jiangxi soviet could grow into a rival power.

The CCP's growing power - In the Jiangxi Soviet, the CCP carried out systematic land confiscations from landlords and redistributed it to landless peasants. With support from the peasants, the CCP was able to win over Rural China, making them a threat.
