Petition To Remove Amber Heard From ‘Aquaman 2’ Attracts More Than 1.5M Signatures

By Dani Di Placido

The messy, prolonged legal battle between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp recently resulted in Depp’s removal from the Fantastic Beasts franchise, where he was promptly replaced by Mads Mikkelsen.

Now, an online petition has popped up, seemingly in response, demanding that Amber Heard be removed from the upcoming Aquaman 2; the petition managed to receive more than 1.5 million signatures, and was created by Jeanne Larson, who is aiming for 3 million signatures.

In the description, Larson writes:

“Men are victims of domestic abuse, just like women. This must be recognized, and action must be taken to prevent a known abuser from being celebrated within the entertainment industry.”

The legal battle between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard has proved incredibly inflammatory and controversial, as multiple accusations of domestic abuse, along with all the sad, petty personal details that the courtrooms have uncovered, paints a deeply depressing picture of a relationship that at one time, seemed incredibly glamorous.

Of course, the woes of the two Hollywood stars inevitably became a proxy for the culture war, as Depp’s removal from Fantastic Beasts was widely viewed as a “victory” for Heard, whose acting career doesn’t appear to have taken a hit.

Ironically, neither of the two actors have proved hugely popular in their respective roles - indeed, many film buffs viewed the recasting of Grindelwald to Mads Mikkelsen as an upgrade (including myself), while Heard’s wooden performance in Aquaman wasn’t particularly well-received.

But this culture war isn’t about either of these blockbusters; it’s about how the entertainment industry, and the public, respond to domestic abuse accusations, and how gender shapes assumptions.

In November, Justice Andrew Nicol decreed on November 2 that a claim made in an article by the Rupert Murdoch-owned tabloid The Sun concerning his relationship with Heard that Depp was a “wife beater” was “substantially true.”

That ruling sparked anger among many of Depp’s fans, and was followed by news of the actor being asked to step down from one of cinema’s biggest franchises (albeit one cursed with multiple controversies), seems to have inspired this petition.

Petitions from impassioned fans certainly aren’t unheard of; indeed, they’re often written off as a joke, or intended by their creators to spark conversations, and raise awareness.

Otherwise, Aquaman seems to have been viewed as a fairly unproblematic franchise, one well-liked by a public flooded with near-identical superhero stories; it would be a shame if this controversy sank the sequel’s chances at the box office (if cinemas are still standing by then).

The messy, melodramatic lives of the rich and famous don’t tend to compliment the child-friendly franchises that big stars inevitably flock to; although, I’m not sure how many audience members, outside of social media junkies, really care about the offscreen lives of their caped crusaders.

It remains to be seen whether executives at DC Entertainment and Warner Bros will respond to the petition - Aquaman 2 is currently scheduled for a 2022 release, with Patrick Wilson and Jason Momoa set to reprise their previous roles.
