The Portuguese Empire was a monarchy. It was very powerful because of the resources they were exposed to such as guns, Atlantic ocean, e.t.c. The Portuguese used slaves from Africa by trading gold, raw materials, food, animals for mining in the Americas and because their own men were dying from disease. They were very brutal to the slaves.
