Mussolini led his private militia of Black Shirts against socialists in hope of a new order of fascism. He gained the support of army leaders with his conservative, anticommunist speeches. In 1922, he demanded the resignation of the existing government and marched into Rome with a band of armed fascists. He easily took over as Victor Emmanuel III stepped down from the throne agreeably.
