The Great Peace of Montreal was the first treaty signed in Canada. It was a unique diplomatic event in the history of both North and South America, and is still considered valid by the Indigenous people of the American First Nations tribes involved. The treaty brought peace that lasted until the British conquest of New France in 1760. It assured New France superiority in dealing with issues related to the region’s First Nations, and gave the French the freedom to expand militarily over the next half century
