On October 1, 1949, Mao Zedong, the chairman of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), proclaimed the establishment of the People's Republic of China. The new state, formally called the Central People's Government, was established under the CCP. The CCP had previously established the Chinese Soviet Republic (CSR) in 1931, which lasted seven years before being abolished in 1937. The new national anthem was "March of the Volunteers," and the Five-starred Red Flag was officially unveiled. The first public military parade of the People's Liberation Army took place after the flag raising. The Republic of China (ROC) had retreated to Taiwan by December 1949.Añadido al timeline:
