11 nov 1975 año - The Angolan Civil War
Descripción:
On November 11, 1975, Angola declared their independence from Portugal. This moment however was immediately overshadowed by the outbreak of a civil war. The conflict was primarily fought between three different parties- influenced by the Soviets and the US. The MPLA(Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola), which had support from the Soviet Union and Cuba; the UNITA (National Union for the Total Independence of Angola) backed by the United States and South Africa; lastly, the FNLA(National Front of the Liberation of Angola) which received support from the West, but later declined. The MPLA secured control over the capital, Luanda where the Soviets and Cubans helped sustain their rule. While the U.S and South African sent aid to help the war. The war continued for decades, filled with brutal fighting and devastating humanitarian consequences. By the late 1980s, the end of the Cold War, led to the withdrawal of all foreign troops. This led to peace efforts , however the conflict resumed until the assassination of Savimbi in 2002, which finally led to a peace agreement. Finally, the Angolan Civil war was one of the longest and deadliest Cold War Conflicts, where global powers lengthened war time for their own strategic gains.
