Japan was successful in their goal to exert influence and receive concessions from Joseon in the form of an “unequal treaty”. Using a false-flag operation at Ganghwa where they triggered a naval confrontation between Korea and themselves resulting in the Japanese gunboat “Un'yō” firing upon Korean forts. In the aftermath of the skirmish, Japan managed to achieve its imperialistic goals, using the naval confrontation at Ganghwa as justification.
